Homemade Cerelac for babies

I introduced cerelac to my kid when he was 7 months old, but he got constipated. Then someone told me about this recipe. It works wonders in treating and preventing constipation. It also helps in introducing variety of fruits to your infants/kids. You can mix in any mashed fruit along with it. You can customize the recipe as per your convenience and need

Wheat                         250 grams ( you can replace this with wheat floor as well)

Millet                          100 grams ( you can replace this with millet/nachani  floor as well)

Bajra                           50 grams

Almonds                  15 pieces

Walnut                      15 pieces (Walnuts are very important for infants as they provide the Omega 3 fatty acids)

Cashew Nuts           15 pieces

Ghee                           for roasting

Note::  you can have your own combination of cereals like rice

Method of Preparation:

1. Finely chop or grate the dry-fruits and roast it with some ghee in a wok, keep aside and let it cool

2. Roast the rest of the ingredients on a medium flame, till they smell cooked. Once cooked, put off the flame and let it cool

3. Once cooled, grind all the ingredients together to make a dry powder

This powder can be stored in an air tight container for months at a dry place

Before serving:

1. Take 50 ml milk and let it boil

2. Add 2 spoon of this dry cerelac to the milk, mix well to break the lumps. The mixture would form a paste, add more milk if required

3. Once the ingredients are cooked properly, put off the flame

4. Take any fruit like banana, chicku(sapota), mango, apple and mix it with this paste

(apple can be peeled and pressure cooked for softening)

5. If your baby likes to have very sweet stuff, you can add jaggery(preferably) or sugar to the mixture

Happy Cooking !

  1. It is really wholesome nutritive recipe for baby. It will be a great guidance for new mothers like me. Thanks Pooja.

  2. Thanks Pooja… My baby is 6months old… I’m gonna try this receipe. One query… Can I add warm water to this instead of milk when I’m out n don’t have access to milk…?

    1. The idea is just to cook the cereal properly, so that the baby digest it without much efforts. So you can boil the cereal in water as well, but just adding warm water would not be that good idea. During travels, I preferred using ready-made cereals. But I avoided excessive use of cereals (Cerelac) as it causes constipation and hence I devised this recipe. And it let my baby taste new fruit and enjoy.

      Happy cooking!

  3. Hey Pooja,
Thx for recipe.. Rest all the recipe is fine, but please do not eat Fruit and Milk together. Only one can eat mango with milk.

    1. Hello Shraddha, I also have heard such things but going by that logic we should not be making fruit shakes for kids anymore.

Anyways, my 6 year pld grew up eating homemade cerelac and even now prefers fruit shakes in the morning over plain milk. Homemade cereals have made him love all fruits for sure.
